Finding your child the right Dance School
Picking a dance school for your child can be complicated, and there is a huge amount of information on the internet. Here are a few tips that we think will help you find the best dance school for your child.
1. Where is the school located?
-are there carpool options within your area or group of friends?
-is it convenient to school/home for your dancer?
-is this where your child's friend's/peers are attending?
2. What is the time commitment?
-are the times that classes for your child available workable with your schedule?
-are the students committed for the entire year, or only for a month at a time?
-are their recitals or other performances that are extra time or cost for your child to participate?
-are there additional time commitment for parents and students outside of classes, like competitions, fund-raising, trips, etc?
-are summer intensives required?
-are all performances and competitions required?
3. Teachers and Content
-is the teacher's type of teaching compatible with your student?
-is the level of dance for your age group where you want your child to be (we suggest watching some old recital videos)?
-is your child's interest taught at this studio (Tap? Ballet? Jazz? Hip Hop? Clogging? combo or sampler classes may be best for younger dancers)?
-does the studio provide or encourage opportunities for outside training, from outside teachers, master classes, workshops, etc?
-are there opportunities for make up of missed classes?
-Read the web site for teacher biographies, class times, classes offered, and dress codes.
-where have most of the teachers trained, and for how long?
-is there a dress code or requirement that you can keep up with?
-try to schedule a time to watch a class (some studios allow parents to watch through two way mirrors).
-ask around!! with so many dance schools and dance students, you can usually find a parent who has taken classes at any studio or dance school.
